History
The region around Fuschl am See has a rich history that dates back to the 8th century. Even then, the first settlers appreciated the clear drinking water and the power of the surrounding streams, which they used to operate their mills. Water was not only a source of life but also a driving force for the development of the settlement.
The “Tavern at Prunn,” later known as Brunnwirt, was first mentioned in 1215 in the oldest surviving register of the bishop. That year, the Archbishop of Salzburg gifted the property to the Bishop of Chiemsee on the occasion of the diocese’s founding.
Since then, the Brunnwirt has remained in the same family’s hands.
Brunnwirt has always been more than just an inn.
In 1788, a small public bath (“Gäubad”) was established here, where a barber-surgeon from Thalgau regularly offered treatments. This made Brunnwirt an important center for the village community, eventually expanding its role to include medical services.
This tradition of care and hospitality turned the house into a cultural hub of the region.
Today, Gerti and Johannes Brandstätter run Brunnwirt with passion and a deep sense of tradition.
Their strong connection to the region and their family is evident in every aspect of the house. What began centuries ago is now carried forward with great responsibility and heart.
Over time, Fuschl am See has evolved from a quiet farming and fishing village into a popular travel destination. The natural beauty and warm hospitality now attract guests from all over the world.
